Artist trading cards are a popular culture phenomenon. If you Google ATCs you will find over 6 million results. Typically they are mini-collages that alter a playing card or are the same size as a baseball trading card or a playing card. Artists pick a theme to inform their design and then trade them with others on the internet, at art events, and even conventions. They are generally not sold, just traded. You will be creating 3 cards total and one will be a self-identity card for this class. Materials available: Magazines, markers, oil pastels, scissors, glue, watercolor, colored pencil. Agenda: Working Critique JR (born 22 February 1983) is a French photographer and artist whose identity is unconfirmed. Describing himself as a photograffeur, he flyposts large black-and-white photographic images in public locations, in a manner similar to the appropriation of the built environment by the graffiti artist. He states that the street is "the largest art gallery in the world". He started out on the streets of Paris. JR's work "often challenges widely held preconceptions and the reductive images propagated by advertising and the media." Agenda: Working Critique Projects Due Friday Michael Gadlin (East alum) See his work in the counseling office! Examining RelationshipsI look at making art as a much bigger and exciting concept than that which only relies on any one individual identity. The making of a picture is about participating in a small piece of a bigger unit. For me painting has been a tool to explore what I do not yet know. The act of making art [process] is setup for those who have a deep desire to be challenged and bring to light important questions. Students will be able to Investigate art concepts such facial proportions, expressive mark making, the grid method of drawing by listening, writing, and creating a correctly proportioned grid portrait.

Agenda: Talk about artist of the day Everyone take out their work Tag critique, give honest feedback! Todays artist: Artemisia Gentileschi is probably one of the most famous female painters from the 17th century and perhaps one of the most celebrated painters of the generation after Caravaggio. You may wonder why we decided to feature a classic painter like Artemisia Gentileschi since we are committed to those up-to-date artistic practices, but sometimes it’s nice to take a step back and learn more about the past in order to understand the contemporary art production better. This Italian painter is one of the first female artists to gain recognition in the Baroque era and she is definitely the most discussed figures from the 17th century today, not only because of her artistic accomplishments but also for controversies which followed her life. She was definitely one of those artists ahead of her time and her work and biography were featured in many recent publications, although it is sometimes difficult to make a distinction between facts about Artemisia Gentileschi and those fictional elements and mythical narratives woven around her personality. She was one of the first female artists to stand up for women’s rights and to pave the way for future feminist authors. In the following paragraphs, we bring you the art and life of Artemisia Gentileschi, from facts to fiction and early roots of feminism. How can you make your portrait more Unique? Why do Artists create self-portraits? Students will be able to Investigate art concepts such facial proportions, expressive mark making, the grid method of drawing by listening, writing, and creating a correctly proportioned grid portrait.
How can you make your portrait more Unique? Why do Artists create self-portraits? You could be forgiven for thinking that these portraits are photographs, but believe it or not they’re actually drawings by Italian artist Emanuele Dascanio. Some of them take up to 780 hours to complete, and it’s easy to see why when you look at the artist’s amazingly lifelike creations. He draws them using a combination of charcoal and graphite and the subjects are often illuminated with a single source of light that gives every piece a certain renaissance quality about it. This isn’t just a coincidence however, as Dascanio was taught the oil techniques of the old renaissance masters by Italian painter Gianluca Corona. He then combined this knowledge with his own unique style in order to create the beautiful portraits that perfectly blend the classic with the contemporary. |
