When looking at a still life painting, or when creating one, the most important thing to ask yourself is, "What does it mean?" Is it a random collection of items, or did the artist have a particular intention when choosing them? It's easy to look at a painting and think, "Hmm, pretty objects", and quickly move on to the next painting. But the artwork usually goes much deeper than just depicting pretty objects. Even if a piece is purportedly meaningless, there isalways an underlying thought process behind the work.
Rotten fruit is a symbol of aging. Mature fruits symbolize fertility, abundance, in the figurative sense of wealth and well-being. A number of fruit has its value: fall of man is denoted by pears, tomatoes, citrus fruit, grapes, peaches and cherries, and of course the Apple. Ribbon-Redo How can can you redo your ribbon drawing to make it better? Show examples and talk about what works well and what can be improved. Agenda: Draw from the ribbon still life on the table. Use any of the mediums on the cart in the front of the room on toned paper provided. Make a tonal drawing on toned paper showing many values, DON'T OUTLINE At the end of class we will talk about the outcomes. We will vote for the best execution.
